Why Michigan Technological University?

Michigan Tech is the nation's largest Master's International campus.

Michigan Technological University offers eight Peace Corps Master's International Programs which allow you to combine two years of Peace Corps service with a graduate degree program. The breadth of our programs allows us to offer specific courses and activities related to your Peace Corps service.

Coordinators and professors with Peace Corps and international experience.

Faculty members in our program have served as Peace Corps Volunteers and worked in international development. They understand the cultural and technical aspects of community development from an applied perspective.

Classes geared towards your time in Peace Corps.

Departments across campus, not just those offering Master's International Programs, offer classes which support your time in Peace Corps. All students enroll in Community Planning and Analysis - a course focused on preparing you for Peace Corps.

Reduced Tuition while on campus.

Tuition is reduced by 30% for all Peace Corps Master's International students while on campus. In the 2011-2012 academic year tuition wil be $457 per credit. (The regular graduate tuition rate is $702 per credit.)

Continuous enrollment as a full-time graduate student while in Peace Corps. Michigan Tech pays the tuition.

You are enrolled as a full-time graduate student at one credit per semester, including the summer semester. Michigan Tech pays the tuition.

Reduced cost Peace Corps medical exams.

Portage Health, the local hospital, reduces the rate they charge for Peace Corps medical exams by 20 to 30%.

Informal education.

Monthly gatherings of 30 to 50 Peace Corps friendly people, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, and other Master's International students, provide you with the chance to discuss and learn about what serving in Peace Corps is really like. Michigan Tech also has a wide range of international interest groups which many Master's International students join.

You will survive Peace Corps.

One in three Peace Corps Volunteers does not complete a full two-years of Peace Corps service. In fifteen years of running Peace Corps programs our *** rate is about 3%. Why are our students so successul? It is a combination of all of the above factors. You will be prepared for Peace Corps service. You will have a skill that is needed in your community. You will be ready for those low points that happen to everybody. You will know community development techniques. You will have the support of experienced faculty.

Research.

The Peace Corps Master's International Office released their "Anthology of Theses and Reports: 2006 - 2010." Of the 76 reports and theses on the CD, 53 were written by Michigan Tech students.

A great location.

Michigan Tech is located on the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Houghton is a small town with the amenities that come with a mid-size university. Michigan Tech's Rozsa Center and the nearby historic Calumet Theater provide a wide range of cultural activities. An inexpensive cost of living makes it a haven for artists. The University owns its own golf course, dowhill and snowboard ski slopes, and the finest collegiate cross-country ski trails in the nation. Tech Trails provides superb mountain biking and nearby Copper Harbor has one of only 48 of the world's International Mountain Bicycling Association EPIC rides. The Park Service ferry to Isle Royale National Park leaves from Houghton. Lake Superior is the world's largest fresh water body - and the water is sparkling cold and clear. Many small parks with rocky ledges and white sand are scattered along the shoreline.

We don't claim to have the big city lights of San Francisco, Paris, or Quito. If that is what you need, Peace Corps may not be for you!

Along the Lake Superior shoreline.

This is a long list - there are many reasons that combining Peace Corps and graduate school at Michigan Tech is a great choice. Contact us.
